Controlling humidity can be mission critical

It is important to be able to control levels of humidity aboard naval vessels. Regardless of how well a ship is maintained, certain areas will always be exposed to corrosion and rust.

A reliable supply of dry air to such areas will keep rust development to a minimum – even untreated steel stops rusting when the relative humidity is kept below 45 per cent.

Moisture is also one of the prime causes of unpredictable system failures and breakdowns, because electronics and motor windings are often particularly sensitive to the presence of moisture.

Installing adsorption dehumidifiers makes it possible to manage the specifications of the air within key areas of a vessel, resulting in considerable reductions in both maintenance and repair costs.

Managing humidity reduces maintenance requirements

Cold and damp spaces in ships’ hulls have always presented maintenance problems for the Norwegian Coast Guard. High levels of humidity in equipment spaces that contain electric motors, pumps and other important installations result in high maintenance costs.

To deal with such problems, and to keep maintenance costs down, the Norwegian Coast Guard has now installed Cotes adsorption dehumidifiers in its OPV vessels KV Nordkapp and KV Andenes.

This make it possible to manage humidity levels effectively, and the Norwegian Coast Guard anticipates a reduction in maintenance costs. So far, the results have been good. Furthermore, almost all Norwegian Coast Guard vessels are now equipped with Dehum UK adsorption dehumidifiers in areas used for storing clothing and other equipment.
